Annoying rattle at idle, MK3 GTi
« on: 25 February 2007, 23:42 »
Folks,

Please help me identify this annoying problem. If you blip the throttle hard from idle, you get a slight rattle just at idle - it's nothing in the block, just an ancilliary item that seems to be either loose or possibly worn out.

In fact i have identified the offending item but i'm not sure exactly what it is and why it's rattling - maybe it's common. It's the end piece for the alternator housing where the spring for the pulley tensioner sits. You can actually see it vibrate if you blip the throttle. In fact if i hold it down and blip you can stop the rattle. I can see that this part is supposed to move left to right to allow the flexibility in the spring but it never used to rattle..

Below are a couple of pics..

Please advise on whether i should look to change this item or if it's something i can 'tighten' ?? The Haynes manual was no help!

Thanks in advance
