start by checking for vacuum leaks, then unplug the 5th injector & WUR to see if that makes any difference.  get the timing checked, and see what the CO levels are like :)

is there any chance of this being a sensor fault? I found one not actually attached to anything when i was changing my gear linkage bushes yesterday

had a look today, car runs the same with WUR and 5th injector unplugged. had a look for vacuum leaks too - but just by visual inspection, is there a proper way to do this?

well for the price of it, I'd replace all the rubber vacuum hosing for a start, about £6 from VW for 5meters :)
and get the injector o'rings replaced too.

cheers, i'll get that looked at next weekend! i've spent all today sanding and priming all the rusty bits so it's starting to take shape!
