GTI project, what do you think?
« on: 12 February 2007, 19:24 »
Hi,

Just bought an F plate GTI for £75. Been sat in a barn for 2 years, no tax or MOT but is mechanically sound (although wants a battery and starter motor), and apart from some scabs of rust, the exterior is all straight and true, not even any scratches. Plus the gears are nice and tight, no slop! Its done less milage than my current GTI (145k compared to nearly 220k) and at £75, its either:

  • Do it up, get T&T and sell it on
  • Do it up for myself, stripped out project weekend car i.e. roll cage, bucket seats (interior either needs good valet or binning, see pics)
  • Keep it for spares

what would you do?

heres some pics, what do you reckon?

I don't think a semi will give the same results

Fix it!
Don't bin that interior, its quite rare & very desirable, can go for around £80 depending on the condition :)

if its worth it save it, its getting harder to find non rotten ones with decent engines in it. Mine was a bargain, just about finished getting it ready for road again now (had to replace all ignition system, radiator, lights and a couple of spots of paint...... paid £400, spent no where near that again and got a very tidy motor, tornado RED, not PINK, lol)

Do what I've done.  Strip it out and spec it up for a track car.  Keep the interior and all bits though so you can get it back as standard if possible.  Mine's all going in the loft.
