too much coolant?
« on: 08 February 2007, 23:56 »

I removed the bypass valves and replaced the heater matrix after loads of cursing and kicking and punching, i ended up kicking the  out of it until it broke then pulled all the broken pieces out and glued/duct taped them all back in. Did a great job fixing the heater box back up, anyway...

I put 2.5 litres of coolant in there and about 2litres of water and the car only warms up a little like luke warm. Did i use too much coolant? Im getting a weird smell as well, must be of the oil from the matrix etc. Im thinking of blocking the front of the rad with some card board so that it warms up quicker.... will this work?

also i blew the rev counter up in the process.... how do i fix the rev counter? did i blow the circuit board up or something? whats the rev counter connected to inside the car, like fuses, relays etc...

oil from the matrix ? cardboard to block the radiator? Id say you never need more than about 1/3 of coolant to water. If your getting wierd smells id prob say its the glue you used to stick it all back together thats melting mate  :smug:

did you thoroughly wash the matrix, they have a dodgy coating on them when they are new..

also have you filled and bled the cooling system?

The rev counter has a fuse, it's number 16 on a '90 spec 8v gti. The fuse box cover will list the fuse as comi instrument and glove box light (I think!) . Blue/15amp again you will need to check yours. If it's not the fuse then I'd hunt through a Haynes manual for a wiring diagram, I don't think it has a relay though.

Hope it hasn't  screwed the instrument cluster, that can easily happen especially if you have jumped/been jump started.

The funny thing is i didnt even need to replace the matrix it was perfectly fine once i opened it all up! I just need to bleed the system out!!

So i bleeded the system out and then i refilled it up but used too much coolant, thats why now its only just getting warm rather that hot.

did you get rid of the valves, and bleed it to rid of the air locks? or are you saying you need to? im a bit lsot, ive done the job not of removing the amtrix, but getting rid of the valves by using two brand new rubber pipes, no copper bodgecore

yeh i have got rid of the valves and bled the system to get rid of air locks. Whats the best way to get rid of air blocks? i opened the top of the water tank and forced water out through the matrix inlet and outlet pipes by blowing into them and making the car spill out all the liquid it had.

there you go dude, i foudn doing that, then takign it for a good blast, dual carriageway for me, to get it pumping and warm, then let it cool down and open the cap to release the pressure and let it settle, topped up, refit cap and should be fine, johnnys recommendations and worked a treat for me

No need on a MK2, coolant always flows thru the matrix.  On a MK1 there is a valve that cuts off the coolant supply thought :)
