Another MKII GTI idle problem!
« on: 29 January 2007, 10:20 »
I have a MK2 GTI 16v 1991 with an annoying idle problem. I know there are probably a few posts on her already but am at work and dont have time at the moment to trawl through them all!

Right...seeing as most of the mechanics in my area seem to be at most...useless, i have taken it upon myself to fix the problem myself.

My car struggles to idle steadily on 1000rpm and swings below and above and threatens to cut out. I have temporarily tightened the throttle cable to increase revs but it will still do it when pulling up to junctions etc... i have replaced, plugs, leads, air filter and even epoxy-ed air flow pipe as did have split in but still having problems. T'is driving me bonkers and desperately need pointing in the right direction as to what to replace or check next.

Hope you can help.

Ta!

Check for air leaks in the vacuum pipes around the back of the engine bay and you could give the ISV a good clean.

Boo Hoo!  checked ISV, soaked in petrol...suprisingly clean! throttle switch working fine and cant find any obvious air leaks so have given in and booked into VW to sort as barely made it to work today without it trying to die every time i stopped.
