DSG & Reverse?
« on: 09 February 2007, 12:13 »
Quick question reference the DSG and selecting reverse:

Picture the situation - Your driving forward and you slowly come to a stop, select reverse and then reverse. Now, in a manual car, you cannot usually select reverse whilst still rolling forward, you have to be stationary or it crunches ........  with the DSG, it appears that you can select reverse whilst still crawling forward (obviously at like 1mph or so) with no obvious dramas.

Is this ok to do this? there is a timely pause before it goes into reverse and all seems very smooth.

Will this damage the box?

Just a query

No damage will be caused to the box.

The floor gear selector is not directly connected to the cogs in the box.  It is, along with the paddles, connected to the box ECU, which controls the movement of the gear cogs and the clutches.

You move the lever from D to R > that tells the box ECU what you have just asked for > the box ECU tells the engine ECU to close the electronic throttle valve (and also shuts the fuel injectors), and checks the engine speed for idle > the box ECU checks the ABS/ESP ECU for zero signal from the wheel speed sensors > only when the box ECU gets the required signals from all the other ECUs, will it then physically engage reverse gear (reverse is never pre-selected), and then instruct the relevent clutch pack to do its' thang!  :nerd:  :nerd:  :nerd:

Understood????

The DSG reverse gear is exactly the same as a normal manual reverse.  If you were lazy with the clutch, or try to engage reverse whilst still going forward, you could often grind the gear, but the DSG will never grind the gear.  You may be able to hear a slight "clunk", with the windows down, bonnet up and radio off, when engaging DSG reverse, but nothing more!
