mk3 problems
« on: 27 January 2007, 15:14 »
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, I am new to the forum and a new owner of a mk 3 16v,
my previous car was a 2.0 8v, which is in perfect condition body wise, I have given it to my daughter, the 16v is a different animal altogether,20k less mileage but the body is crap, namely the front of each sill has had a poor repair on it with the plastic covers being ripped aside instead of removed. there are  bubbles elsewhere on the car but they arent peforated so will be easy to sort. is this unusual for a mk3 or was I just very lucky with the 8v?
the other thing is the gear selector, its pot luck which gear you get, does anyone know how to adjust this?
the car has koni shocks al round but is too low, cant get a jack under, are they adjustable for height?

Hi,

There are a lot of crap Mk3's out there, I looked at a load before buying mine. Bubbling, rust, door sills rusty, etc etc.

Door sill problems are common on Mk3's - depending on how well its been taken care of. Bubbling etc is also a sign its not been looked after or poor accident damage repair.

For decent repair and spray of of door sills should cost about 8-100 quid if you want to have it re-done. Can get the plastic covers from a breakers, ebay or dealers if they need to be replaced.

I would definately have the gear box looked at, they can be a bit stiff but not like the way you describe.

Just had a look at the Koni website and the only suspension kit they do drops 35mm for a 16V or 8V, so unless they are coilovers dont think you will be able to adjust.
