Heater blower only working on highest speed
« on: 03 December 2006, 20:20 »
Hi

Ever since I owned my Golf, the heater blower has only worked on level 4. I thought this was to do with the resistor pack so brought a new one from eBay but it hasn't made a difference.

Is there anything else I can do to fix this other than buying a new motor? :(

cheers, jax

hi jax, the heater speed control is controlled by a cable. it could be that the cable has slipped so you only get power on no. 4 setting. not sure hpw to adjust tho, but to get to it, u need to take off the dial panel and 6 screws, (2 behind ash tray).

Actually my brother was complaing today that his heater blower sometimes doesn't work but if you slam the door or knock the panel it'll start working...obviously sounds like something's loose, what could it be? Is this a common problem?

the heater blower will have a resistor pack on the side of it, if this blows it will only work at full speed :)

are you sure the resistor pack isn't blown as well though, was it new? ;)
Check for voltage at the plug to the fan when you select various speeds.

Like rubjonny has said....
I am thinking resistor!!! As going by the description that's the number 1 culprit..It may be worth trying another (ask someone friendly with a mk3 golf near where you live and just give it a try).....I have just replaced my resistor and i had no heater fan at all....and every vw place i spoke to said that It won't be the resistor if the fan dosen't run at all!!

Well the eBay ad said 'new' but who knows! I'll check voltage with a multimeter and see. I was totally expecting the fan to work when I plugged in the new resistor :(

Thanks for your replies, I'll let you know..

oops..been a bit of a while since my last post on this thread. I finally got round to taking the heater control panel off. Tested the cables at the resistor end and showed that the fault was with the speed knob. If I pushed the connector into the back, the other speeds worked.

Seems the bit of metal that moves on the knob when u turn it was not connecting with the other static bit on the slower settings. Bent it a bit with pliers and working now. Tried original and replacement resistor and both work on all speeds now :D
