why so under powered?
« on: 26 January 2007, 22:06 »
i have got a 1.8t gti and love it but was just wondering if these engines are so tuneable why didnt vw make the most out of them. a mean even vauxhaull get 140bhp out of there 2.0ltr sri vectra and vw can only get 115bhp out of there 2.0 golf gti, and other makers squeeze  more out of there engines ie renault sports 182?

Ah but i think you'll find that the Vw engine will be running for a lot longer than the vauxhall

Agreed but you look at the Mk3 2.0 golf gti 8v engine was 115bhp and was underpowerd for the size and in a lot of peoples eyes a flop but yet the 2.0 16valve made around 150bhp and was made to try and rescue the GTI badge.

Another is the anni mk4 that had more power over the normal 1.8t as in my eyes a sort of lever to attract more buyers and it was a higher spec.

End of the day its all about money really manafactures dont want to plow money into a car tuning the engine to all it can be if its gona be a lost cause

Someone may correct me if im wrong but thats kinda the way i see it, yes the engines have plenty of potential for more power. But manafactures dont want to waste the money

Easy one that - Vauxhall just get on with it and make decent engines (some 3 cylinder Corsa stuff excluded!) where as VW for years have marketed their cars to make people believe that the quality and engineering are soooooo much better than their competitors. In reality they are no better, just the same.

i think you have to lookat the bigger picture with vag, they have seat which is aimed at the younger market and they seem to be putting out quite cheap/fast cars where as vw and audi are playing the class card, the  new gti is still rated as one of the best all round hot hatches because you get a fast, well driving car but also a class cabin! now vauxhall are a young brand and it shows in there hot cars, big body kits and as much power then can squeeze out but that doesnt make them great driving cars! i must admit the astra vxr is one sweet looking ride but i would take the gti, more cred in my mind!

Very good point there. Everyone knows what a Golf GTI is, where as an Astra VXR - you will get a lot of blank looks :undecided:
