The Mk4's did start on an R plate, but I have seen an S reg Mk3 GTI 16v, although it was probably just a car that didn't sell till later.
5 doors for me really, much more practical. Don't have kids, but just for giving people lifts, or getting stuff into the back when going away, etc.
