Rust,engine and car
« on: 15 January 2007, 12:48 »
Just want a bit of advice, i have about a 2inch strip on the passenger side rear door of rust at the front going vertically upwards, but it's only surface rust for the time being and i have a circle about 0.5 inch on the drivers door, would it be worth getting these sorted or just leave them until it fails an MOT and replace the doors?

Also it's only a 1.4 1996 model, how hard would it be to get a vr6 or 1.8 engine in the front with regards to room. I'm not planning on doing it just yet, only after i have finished school and got a job. Or should i just sell the golf and look for one that's already been done or another that has fewer miles, it's only done 70000 miles for now anyway.

To save yourself money, time and future effort, if its only surface rust now, rub it back to metal with some sand paper, treat the rust on and around the area with some rust treatment liquid (from halfords or similar) and prime the area. If your not confident enough to paint it leave it primered until you have enough money to pay professional.

I did this just at the weekend on one of my sills, im going to paint it in the summer but for now ive got rid of the rust therefore saving it growing even bigger.

Act fast with rust or it will get bigger, quick!

if u dont mind it being in its current condition.....

id be saving up for a vr6!

forget the 1.4 shell, do some penny counting, wait till u can afford the insurance, then get one with the engine u want, if u dropped a vr6 into your current shell, youd be lookin at replacing at least the suspension and brakes just so it could handle the extra power....

if it is only surface rust, then the MOT shouldnt be a problem, just use it for a run around for now!!!

or even have a go at sorting it yourself, nothin better than a bit of hands on experience!!!
