Cam belt change

Hi I'm a newbie and was wondering what possible symptoms you could see on a wearing cam belt for a golf gt 1.9 tdi 100 Mk 4? will the the car drive slower as a result of a wearing cam belt. i know once the cam belt snaps the car grinds to a complete halt.
Volkswagen usually recommend cam belts to be changed at 80K but when do you change the cam thereafter?
thanks

Is this a serious post ?
If you suspect your cambelt is worn, then you need to not drive it at all and get it checked out asap because if it snaps while driving you'll do a whole load of damage and it will cost you a small fortune as you will do all sorts of damage and it will cost more than a new cambelt. The car wont drive slower it will just drive until it snaps and as you say it will then grind to a halt and you'll have a nice big garage bill.
I think mk4 cambelts need to be changed every 60-80k and probably the same again there after but someone else will be able to confirm that I guess.
Welcome to the forum and seriously, if you suspect the cambelt is a prob then get it checked out asap.

my cam belt on my gti slipped a month after buying it, had to replaced 6 valves, new pulley new belt kit new head gasket set and a few other things, so if you think you might need a new one replace it!! i will not be making the same mistake again.

signs of wear, you should see writing on the belt or some kind of markings, these will wear from the outside in as the belt wears so it will appear if you could see the process sped up as though there was an internal line on the belt getting narrower thus the narrower/thin this 'line' appears the closer you are to having no engine(generally although they can go anytime really so get a good one)

Usually you can tell by the condition of the belt, tbh if your that unsure then i would suggest you get it changed ASAP before you have a bigger crisis and bigger bill.
