Retrofit audio
« on: 14 December 2006, 11:01 »
Before anyone shouts I have tried searching for this but being new to these forum things I haven't been able to fully answer all my questions. (I wonder how long I'll get away with that excuse for )

I'm picking my GTI up from a car supermarket on Saturday and as a result of both a need to get a fairly "cheap" car and a lack of patience to wait for the exact spec I want, I haven't got all the options I would have liked (Xenons for one but I've conceded defeat on these!)

I think that the car has the bog standard RCD300 (?) stereo with no ipod, usb or cd changer, and it definitely has an armrest.  I have a couple of questions:

1) can a cd changer be retrofitted into the armrest?  When speaking to the stealer on a test drive he told me that VW are moving away from putting the cd changers in the armrest and are opting to use the an in dash unit instead.
I have seen a couple of "VW cd changers" on ebay which IIRC look like the one in the armrest in my mates golf plus (see http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-6-DISC-IN-DASH-CD-CHANGER-GOLF-BORA-PASSAT-POLO-LUPO_W0QQitemZ140062834807QQihZ004QQcategoryZ75305QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem). Would this fit the gti?

2) Would i be better off just sticking the changer in the boot in the old fashioned way?

3) I've seen a post on here explaining how to retrofit an ipod connection to the glovebox.  Can I do this and have a cd changer or will this confuse the head unit?

I realise I'll probably get more of an idea for this when I actually get the car and can have a proper look at it but I'm getting very excited and cant wait!

Cheers for your help

i think the answers are....

1) it is possible but VW will charge you one kidney or half your liver for the pleaseure. I would be hesitant in getting an beay one for a different car. If you can find an in anrm rest golf one then go for it.
2) Don't bother, see 3).
3) Get the ipod link fitted inot the armrest and ditch the cd changer - you won't need both.
3b) I think it's one or the other, not both.

Agreed?

Hi,
I think that you can connect both ipod and cd changer via one of these.......

This ways costs far more than its worth - around £400 +++ headaches

2) Would i be better off just sticking the changer in the boot in the old fashioned way?

YES

3) I've seen a post on here explaining how to retrofit an ipod connection to the glovebox.  Can I do this and have a cd changer or will this confuse the head unit?
