slightly too much oil..is it a problem?
« on: 03 December 2006, 14:15 »
Helping my brother check the fluid levels on his Golf last week, and it looked like his oil level was slightly low - about 2 - 3 mm on the dipstick..the car was sat slightly uneven however as half of it was mounted on the kerb..he was in a rush so i said well it's probably ok let's just top it up.. so we did..

Anyways i didn't put much in - about half a regular sized funnels worth.

He's been driving a week.  Just now i went to check, as the car has been stood all night without being started..and guess what.. the oil level is about 2 - 3 mm over the MAX mark.

Now i'm a tad worried, is this going to be a problem?  I slid the airbox off and had a quick look at the air filter to see if any oil had come through the air breather pipes but it seems fine.  So i'm thinking hopefully it'll be ok?

Or do you suggest i get under it and drain some out?

The encouraging thing is that the car is on 140k miles and it's done 3k miles since the last oil change and obviously hasn't needed a drop..  That's much better than my 2003 Vauxhall which drinks like it's free beer and even my dads 2000 model Nissan!!

I'm well impressed.

Advice appreciated.

i shouldn't think a couple of mill should make much difference. It'll probably just chuck it out into the throttle body.... which you'll then have to clean.

drain it if you can be arsed.

Leave it alone, it will burn the excess.

brothers done about 300 miles in it this week and can't see any signs of it coming out anywhere or even being burnt off for that matter..guys on the other forum are telling me to leave it as it shouldn't make much difference..

Did think about draining it, but it's so bloody windy outside just can't be arsed...

Thanks chaps, appreciate the responses..
