G60 engines
« on: 06 January 2004, 22:58 »
Happy New Year everyone.

I was hoping someone on here knows whether the pistons & connecting rods from the G60 engine were the same in the corrado as the golf. also does anyone know if the TDC of the G60 engine is the same as a MK1 golf dx engine? It may take me a wile to respond to any answers as I am really struggling to get on the site!!

Thanks

Thanks for replying Steve. I thought no one liked me :'(. I had been told that the golf G60 will fit but I have found a set of Corrado ones for sale and wanted to check they were the same type.

Can't you buy the whole corrado block? both golf and corrado are "pg" engines.. I am interested in your conversion, keep us posted.

Basically I am trying to keep it as cheap as possible. I bought the turbo, exhaust manifold and down pipe to fit a mk1 Golf for ?80 and have found a set of pistons and connecting rods from a Corrado for ?20 (in excellent condition). I have an intercooler from a Uno turbo for free. I took the engine out last weekend and I intend to fabricate the turbo oil feed and return next. The return will go directly into the sump and feed from an oil channel in the head. I still need a header tank with an extra return for the water from the turbo and I have teed in to the main water feed into the engine for the supply. I hope to use a fuel pump, metering unit and injectors from a early 80's Porsche 911 to help supply enough fuel but I haven?t found any of this yet. I have another post about the breaking system but I don?t think I can afford the 4 pots any more :(. There are a few odd bits left to think about but I am in no rush to finnish, I was thinking sometime in march. Anything else I should be thinking about please let me know. Keep an eye on my picture gallery for more photos of my conversion.

Thanks for taking an interest Steve

For my water return I used a core plug for a t/diesel, it has a stub on it for a hose.I knocked out a plug that was closest to the turbo and ran the return to that. Got the plug from VW, about ?7.00. I'll see if I can find the part no.

Steve

Your water supply sounds like a good idea if I could get the part No when you have chance that would be great.

Also I was wondering what you used for your fuel supply. Have you kept to the mechanical injection or are you using electronic? The reason I ask is the on boost supply of fuel.  Because I don?t have an ECU to control the flow of fuel when the turbo spools up I have been thinking of using the cold start injector to add the extra required fuel by fitting a pressure censor to the intake manifold so when the pressure increases because of the force of air the fifth injector will operate instead of on temperature when cold. I know this will affect the starting of the car but this is not for daily use so I can allow it to worm up before I start to drive the car. Do you have any thoughts as to whether this is feasible?

I am using the cis motronlc off the donor car, fuel enrichment is by a variable resistor tapped into the wire from the temp sensor to the ecu. No boost, normal fueling, boost (using a perssure swich and a relay to "see it") rich mixture using the resistor to make the ecu think the engine is cold  ;).
I used the cold start injector trick on my 8v, but used a extra injector fitted infront of the throttle body so mixture distribution was better than the factory possition.
Part no for the core plug....
