Getting my valve faster!
« on: 30 October 2006, 12:29 »
Just wondering what mods can be done to get a 91 16v faster. Would a panel filter and exhaust release more horses. I was thinking about putting a MK3 2.0 16v bottom on. One thing that worries me....my car has covered 161,400 miles, it does however have FVWSH and 2 owners fron new so i hope the engine would be able to handle any modifications?

The best mod for price and improvement is the 2.0 bottom end conversion in my opinion. However its not the mk3 abf bottom end you need but the 9A i belive. Do a search on the matter cos its been discussed loads.

first off i would get your current engine rolling roaded and see what power its putting out

then take it from there - u can get 170-180bhp outta a good 1.8 16v - talking full head job etc - im getting 153 outta mine and that was only with the fueling adjusted.

2.0's arent the easiest to find for them, and more than likely will need rebuilt also

I've got a ABF lump in my mk2 and it fits with no clearance problems, although I've heard plenty of stories about people having trouble with them so I guess it's luck of the draw with it...don't forget if you go down the ABF route then you have the Seat range to thieve engines from aswell. Mine came out of a Cordoba which has a lower insurance group than a mk3 GTI apparently which helped when I got my quote

To start with though do like Gambit said - get yours on a rolling road and then you will see what sort of state it's really in.
08.03.10 - 3, maybe 4 weeks, and I want my golf back on the road!
