Temperature trouble
« on: 19 January 2004, 11:20 »
Hi,

I have a coolant problem with my 1991 16v. The temp warning light keeps flashing . Now I think that this is down to low coolant level, so I top it up and it goes out. Next thing the light comes on and it seems that the coolant level has dropped.

This points to a leak right? Not sure. I think that the coolant is running too hot and boiling off. The fan does kick in but only when the coolant starts to steam out of the expansion tank. And it only seems to kick in for about 10-15 secs. I'm sure that the thermostat is working properly as both radiator (in-out) tubes get hot.

I am thinking that the fan is cutting in too late and that I may need a new temp switch for it.

Any other ideas??????

If your loosing water with no leaks and over heating then it may suggest a head gasket ... check the condition of the oil, and for milky residue in the expansion tank.

run the car at idle and wiggle a few pipes here and there to see if water gets out

i once had a leak on one of the oil cooler pipes
