First Stone-Chip !!!
« on: 29 October 2006, 16:05 »
Washing and waxing today noticed my first stone-chip    Right on the lip of the bonnect above the VW badge.  Reflex silver is probably the best colour for hiding it though as the undercoat/primer is a grey colour (as opposed to my black IS200 which showed up everything).   Having had company cars before I've never really bothered doing anything with stone-chips - any advice/action I should take?

First

This is what I do:

Then buy a touch up stick from vw.

DONT USE THE BRUSH PRIOVIDED - ITS FAR TOO LARGE

Then get some card - an old buisness card will do.

Rip it in half and put a blob of paint from the touch up stick on one half.

Next take a corner of the other half of the card and dip it into the paint and then apply very small amounts of paint to the chip untill the chip is "full" of paint!

job done!

Commiserations - I'm convinced roads should be made of rubber or some other 'soft' material.

Doc is right about the standard touch up brush, way too big.  I bought some cheap artist brushes from WHsmiths which work a treat. The trick is to be patient and work in layers, not to fill the chip in one big blob.

I also got one of the kits which help get a reasonable finish, but the first time you put sand paper to car is a leap of faith. Polishes up fine though. Just slightly over fill the chip and rubd it back flush.
