Newbie needs advice
« on: 11 October 2006, 21:39 »
Hi all. I have just purchased a 1997 Mk3 Golf cabriolet 1.8i 8v. Having come from a scooby turbo to this car (power wise) is a bit of a kick in the nuts so i was just wondering if there was any power enhancing mods which are worth doing to make it a bit pokier. Also its sittting on a set of 17's without any suspension mods, what lowering springs would you guys recommend? Cheers Mike (If you are wondering why i have changed car i needed something a bit smaller for the mrs and liked the look of these.)

hello.

your cars a 2.0 8v mate.

just go down the non turbo tuning route. decent panel filter and ducting, exhaust , remap. all that'll be roughly £1000 for @ 20bhp.

eibach springs are the best.

No matter what you do it isnt going to compare. The only thing that would come close would be a supercharger or turbo kit.

I'm not really trying to compare the power to a scooby,  I just want to make the car a little more responsive without having to change the engine and put turbo's on etc. Something simple but effective.

Also to monkeyalan how do you mean it is a 2.0ltr, is it badged up wrong???

No, definitely a 1.8, 1798cc on the log book. I really want to drop this car but how much is a good distance without having to roll the arches and is it just a case of putting lowering springs on or will it need anything else as it is a soft top. Any help is appreciated. Cheers Mike
