1986 mk 2 gti fuelling problems ?
« on: 24 September 2006, 09:43 »
Hi Guys, first time user so bear with me !!
I have just bought an 86 mk 2 gti 3 door with 149k on clock, which did not run, the external fuel pump was replaced by the previous owner, but unfortunately, with the pump from a later car (digifant), this car is jettronic ? and still wouldn't run, the problem was identified as the metering head, which was replaced, now it runs............however after a decent run it keeps stuttering. If you turn the car off, leave it for 10 mins or so it is a nightmare to start, but from cold it starts fine. Another problem is that it seems that the idle cannot be turned down, and hot or cold it sits at about 1800 rpm ? The petrol sender wasn't working, but after a good stamp on the brakes last night, it has started, could all problems be down to internal pump in tank, or the wrong external pump ??????????????
Any ideas ????????????
Generally the car is in good order, unmolested with no major rot, bar the bottom passenger side of wind screen behind wiper arms, and water is pouring in !!!, I have also had to tape up the sunroof, but that a side its a great old car that pulls well, and well worthy of a little tlc. I have had a few mk2 gtis and forgot just what a cracking car they are.
Hope some one can help !!!
Cheers
Martyn ( Isle of Man )

The digifant pump will be the problem, it cant supply enough fuel pressure for the k-jet system!
You need to get a k-jet 8v or 16v pump.  While you're there, check the in-tank pump is also working.

The digi & k-jet pumps are quite alot different though, you would have to convert some hose ends to fit as the K-Jet fuel feed pipe has a banjo connector and the digi pump just has hose clips.

I actualy have a pump & housing, but you'll need 4 rubber mounts from VW and a new fuel filter to make it complete...

:cool:Cheers Rubjonny, how much do you want for the lot ?, I trust its in good working order ? ive actually got a new fuel filter, (god there not cheap) that i bought assuming the car had the right pump!! I live on the isle of man (IM2 7AR), so perhaps you could include postage in price. I have been offered a pump to try of a mates 16valve, which I hope to change over 1 night this week, if that solves my problem you may have yourself a buyer !!, do you know if the mounts are available from the vdub agencies still ? once again cheers for the info, and i will keep watching, and be back in touch !!!!!!!!!
