16v pop quiz
« on: 19 January 2004, 14:53 »
Just been to see a 16v and somthing was bugging me, then i realised - it doesnt have any 16V badges.  Is this normal?  Any other key differences between 8v and 16v?

Look at the rev counter,
i think the 16v redlines at 7000, the 8V redlines at 6000.

looking in the engine bay is a big give away.. if it looks like half the engine is missing then its an 8v :) if its got a big thing that says 16v on it, then its a 16v ;)

the 16v does have 16v badges on front and back as std..  look in my gallery...

:D  yes, the engine is definatly a 16v, its really a case of being a bit suspicious that it might not have started life as such.  It was also a bit sluggish below 3k rpm, more so than i would have thought, and i got me thinking it might not be all it appears to be

not sure about the pulling away thing.. i'm normally looking where i'm going, lol
doesnt suprised me some might find it sluggish till u get revs up a lil..

on the badges thing...

my 16v didnt come with the front 16v badge, but wouldnt expect the rear one to go walkies..  (replacements are a fiver from VW)

what badges did the one you looked at have? was it debadged totally... or?

just a sidenote... the V5 says GOLF GTI 16V on mine

might be worth doing a 'spot the diff' article on this, because I know I asked a lot of similar questions when i was looking at mine, and have seen others asking some too.

no badge on the front, normal GTi badge on the back.  Until you pop the lid, you wouldnt know it was a 16v.  Previous owner was a fleet so i wouldnt have though they would muck about with it, it makes me a bit wary as to its life, like has it had a new front grill?

methinks i should leave this one alone...

well the 16v badge just pops into the grille and locates with two bits the clip over the grille fin, so it might not have been replaced. my grilles colour coded, but not sure they all are on valvers.

it not being there on the rear is more suss to me.. unless theres evidence of glue n stuff left behind, but otherwise the GTI badge at the back is the same as the normal GTI one, its just that theres an extra one underneath.

since you're suss anyways its prob best to leave it just for ya own piece of mind. :)

my mk3 16valver came with no badges on front or back, just the git on both rear doors (its a 5 door)

And its deffo a 16valver, says on v5, and there def a big difference under bonnet, as i looked at 2 cars on same day when i bought mine, one an 8v and the other a 16v and theres a lot missing in the 8v.
