Had a Manual V5 170 bhp manual on a 51 plate the only caution I would say is to try and find out if the twin engine fans have been changed, if they are original fit then one will blow a fuse, overload the other.....another blown fuse and then you overheat!! £400 to replace the fans (15p for the fuse). VAG will replace if in warranty but scant hope of that with older cars.
You might also want to check that it's a UK vehicle, there are a number of vehicles from Europe that aren't registered with VAG UK and their value is less, I have heard that the V5 is prone to this as it was quite rare over here but a quick ring to VAG with the VIN number will tell you one way or the other (I didn't call them before you ask and yes my V5 was from Europe...... another lesson in life!!!)
I might have had a Friday car but in the two years I had it it was roadside recovered twice, over heated once and had engine sensors fail twice (£100 a pop) on the up side it had a good willing engine plenty of speed, nice interior and a good ride (for longer journeys) and for the record I have a friend with one who has had no trouble whatsoever so they can't be all bad!!
Hope this helps even though it's on the Neg side!!
