Water leak in heavy rain
« on: 25 August 2006, 10:57 »
Hi,

My Mk2 88 8v has a water leak under the dash that only appears in heavy rain. I've checked the drain holes are clear under the bonnet but it still happens. Water drips on the left hand side of the passenger footwell. Does anyone know what causes this and how to stop it?

I garage the car in winter but this summers rainfall has caught me out and I'm now driving round in a mobile sauna!

Cheers.

My 89 MK2 leaked in the same place and on the drivers side too, it turned out to be the windscreen rubber letting the water in (mine only leaked when it pissed down). You can either have a windscreen rubber fitted or do what I did which was have the screen rubber sealed up, either way its not a big deal as MK2 screens arent bonded like the later Golfs. I just phoned a local windscreen fitter and said I wanted the rubber changeing because it was leaking and he suggested having it sealed up instead so I left the car in the garage for about 4 days to dry out and then he came round and did the job, cost me £25 and never leaked again.

What Gambit said... I had leaks through the blower area. Take the scuttle cover off, and on the left of the car, it has a cover over the blower unit, this was full of leaves and sh!t, few minutes with the hoover solved the problem :)
