Thanks to any one who tried to help with my previous post about my car not running your comments were appreciated.
Said car is now running and boy does it go.
After running vag diagnostics it was decided we would have to check the timing, so it was stripped and we discovered that not only was the timing out (by about 3 teeth advanced) but also when the cam belt was changed the tensioner hadn't been replaced either. Along with this with the piston at TDC (top dead centre) the timing marks on the drive pulley didnt line up. Not a problem we just fitted a new belt, tensioner and timed it with the piston at TDC. Once all work was done we compression tested it and got 9bar which is about spot on and fired her up what a sweet sound to my ear. After about an hour or so of driving and plenty of red lining i parked the car up and went about fitting a couple of little extras i had got (16v door pins etc i know im a tart). I then decided to go for another drive and 30 seconds down the road it was not running again i was gutted.
So it was tow it back to mine and take it apart time again. Once again we wound the piston to TDC and discovered that with the piston up the timing mark on the cam pulley was now 8 teeth out being an interference engine i feared the worst, valve damage. Now we couldnt figure it out, it had a new belt tensioner and was timed perfectly and the belt was still under tension so how had the timing gone so bad. Off came all the bits untill we discovered the problem. When we timed it up the first time we marked the cam shaft pulley with some marks just in case we ever wanted to time it again these marks were miles out. So we took off the crank shaft pulley and discovered that the dowel it should have on the back of it so it cant slip and can only go on in one place was missing? Soon as this is cast where it went is anybodies guess but so far everyone iv spoken with has never heard of such happening. So i was now faced with an anxious wait untill a new sprocket could be obtained so we could set about re timing it and seeing if there was any damage. New sprocket turned up yesterday was fitted and the car re-timed and joy of joys it works perfectly. I have found out this morning that any more than 9 teeth out on the cam shaft and the valves will almost certainly be damaged. How lucky was I.

Once again many thanks to anyone who tried to help if you want your car timed let me know ive done it 3 times in a week now im pretty good at it
