how to soften up a lowered Mk2
« on: 31 December 2003, 14:08 »
My mk2 8v is lowered on eibach springs(bout 40mm)
With bilstien gas shocks.
But it aint half a rough bummpy ride, its only got g60 15" steels on as well.
As a garage fitted the shocks and springs im sure he said that he kept the original bump stops as they werent include with the shocks :o
How can i improve the ride, new bump stops and/or vw rubber mounts??????
Please help as my mrs is not impressed ::)

Change the springs for more moderate ones, or you could try some konis.

I saw your posts below on lowering, and you seem to know what your talkin about.
I was told that eibach springs were the best you can buy-and fair play they handle brilliantly, its just the old bad roads and them b@stard speed bumps that really upset my mrs and kids :(
Would changing the bumpstops for a new/different type make a difference?

cheers

If the bump stops haven't been shortened and you have lowered it then you will get a harsh ride, as the suspension will not be able to travel very far.
Eibachs are the best. 25mm lowered would have been better.

In my opinion its ya shocks mate. I almost went for the bilsteins, they are great on the track but not that great for practical daily road use. I was warned off by a guy who had them removed after only one week as it was too harsh a ride, he's had new bump stops too!

I went for Koni's adjustable with eibach springs in the end. I fitted new VR6 bump stops when the susspension was changed. I'm on 40 profile tyres at 35 psi on 17" wheels and my ride is beautiful!!!

I've had the koni's on their softest setting since new but now they are bedded in i may stiffen them up a little. Ride is not at all harsh, similar bump rate to before but much firmer rebound and no body roll. Car goes round corners like its on tracks!

My advice would be to keep the springs but sell the bilsteins, get some new bump stops and fit some Koni's. You can keep ya drop but you will have a much nicer ride. Change all your bushes at the same time and it will feel like a brand new car!

Hope this helps.

You can't beat
Koni Shocks & Eibach Springs
I had this combo on my MK2 it was sitting on G60 15" Steelies and the ride was spot on soft enough for the wife not to winge but firm enough to put a smile on my face when I used to hit the twisty stuff  8)
