Fuel Pump Pulling Too Many Amps?
« on: 30 December 2003, 15:37 »
Problem with MK1 Gti Cabriolet (1990 1.8 K-jet)

Just been testing the fuel pump on my car that has been running very badly as described in my previous posts. We put a multimeter on the pump while running and it was showing a 12 Amp pull. I was led to believe that it should only be 6? Is this correct and if so is the pump knackered?

The lift pump is new so that has been eliminated. The fuel pump fuse often blows which suggests the main pump is shafted. The only other thing is a white filter above the main pump under the car. Is it possible that this can get blocked and cause the pump to struggle?

Cheers

Yep, that's far too high. However this doesn't always mean that its the fuel pump at fault..........a partially blocked filter will cause the pump to work harder and therefore draw more current.
Check/replace all filters if it hasn't been done recently and in particular, check the inlet to the pump. One I looked at recently (MK1_BOY's) had an inlet filter that was full of crud. Its actually in that union that you disconnect the inlet fuel pipe from. I'm not sure if all pumps have that filter or whether some have a NRV there, but either way it should be clean.

Failing that..........its the pump :(
