Mk4 Engine in Mk1
« on: 21 December 2003, 18:45 »
Has anyone ever fitte a Mk4 engine into a MK1, if so what was it and how hard to do.  DIY or professional only.  I have come across a nice Mk1 Gti but engine needs new head and i thought about engine transplant instead.  Have seen a 1.6 mk4 unit on e-bay for ?75 minus ECU.

Any hints

Don't see the advantage in fitting a mk4 1600 engine in a nice mk1 gti. If the mk1 is that good, o/haul the head or fit a 2ltr engine in and it will look the same under the bonnet. Mk4 engines are going to be a pain to fit and get to work. My advice is repair what you have with the correct parts ;).
