Funny Climate Control Noises

Hi,

For the last few weeks my mk4 1.8T has been making strange noises coming from the passenger footwell.  At first I thought it was something to do with the passenger airbag but after elimination I've discovered it's caused by the climate control.  Every time I slow down to approx 10mph or less there's a tapping noise. One second intervals, sounds just like someone tapping the underside of the car with a hammer.  This only hapens when the system is on auto or econ.  If i press re-circulate or switch it off all together, it stops straight away. The climate control is still working fine though. Sometimes the noise is different (way to hard to describe - almost like a grunting sound) but mostly it's the tapping.  I've looked through all the previous threads about aircon and there doesn't seem to be anyone else with the same noise.  Does anyone know what it is and is there anyway of fixing it without a visit to the stealers?  I'm out of warranty btw.

Its your recirculation flap motor, common problem on the mk4. I have the same problem with mine and have brought a new motor £80 from vw, But keep putting of fitting it as its not a easy job.

There is a how to guide on another forum so if you need it i will send you the link.

Oh you could try pressing the recirculation button to stop the noise works on mine but doesn't cure the problem I'm afraid.

My 1.8t went in today under warrenty to fix exactly the same noises as yours they changed the aircon unit and also the relay, seems fine now.

I poped in the dealers yesterday, and my compressor is screwed, getting it done next week
