Strange Shaking
« on: 13 July 2006, 16:39 »
Hi All

I have a 89 Mk1 CAB.

When I am on the motorway doing approx 70 , The car rides smooth for approx 3 seconds and then the steering shakes for approx 3 seconds then smooth then shakes then smooth then shakes....

You get the picture !

Ideas ?

Steve

I'd start off with checking that your wheel bolts are all on and tight, then I'd get my wheels balanced and see how it goes, you might want to throw in a wheel allignment for good measure too. I've also heard of people having similar problems if the car has been stood for long periods and this causes the tyres to have a flatter edge where it's been stood.

Start by checkin the tire pressures, mine was like this and the pressures were very low!
If that don't help swap your rear wheels to the front, this will help rule out balancing problems, unless you rear tires are out of balance as well ;)

Could this be the 'scuttle shake' that cabbies suffer from?  Ours hasn't even got an engine in so I have no idea what it feels like

They do shake a bit at high speeds but it shouldn't be noticable at 70.

id check your suspension, at high speeds if ur struts nakerd then u`ll feel a judder (as if ur driving over them anoying white lines on speed restriction roads.) as u can feel it vibrating through the steering wheel then id start with the front ones. also check ur suspension mounts. hope this help.

Might be a idea to get your tracking looked at - got my '89 Cabbie done a few weeks back & there is now a marked improvement in the handling & ride at speeds. Well worth the £40 it cost to get it done.

.....because of the lack of a roof this normally drastically reduces the torsional stiffness of cabby's so they are susceptible to a slight body shake but you'll notice it more around the dash area, hence the term "scuttle shake". It's not a big major shake your bones type of movement so if it's shaking like a sh1ting dog then you may hav other problems.
