Strange Electric Windows
« on: 13 June 2006, 16:37 »
Hi all

My car is a MK3 16V GTI on an L plate. Have had it for 18 months now. The electric windows work front and rear and all the switches are OK. The problem i have is that the Auto-shut (one touch closure) function does not work on the Driver's electric window, it only works on  the rear window on the passenger's side but not on any of the other windows! I ahve to hold the driver's window switch fully until it closes.

Now, I might be mistaken, but I thought that the one touch closure function only worked on the Driver's side on early Mk3s.  I thought this was a safety feature and I would certainly not expect the feature to work on the rear passenger window, especially as Kids could get their heads trapped in there!

I'm wondering if anybody knows whether it could be simply a case of the relevant wires having been swapped over at some point previously from the Drivers window to the left rear passenger window. Does anyone else have the one touch closure feature on their rear electric windows. I would appreciate a response from anyone who knows.

Thanks

Raptor

I don't know for sure, but it does sound like that's exactly what's happened.  My one-touch closure doesn't work either, but then my passenger-side sometimes spontaneously stops working from time to time, so my setup isn't the best benchmark anyway...

The windows in my 1996 gl have the auto open and close on both the front and back windows. As for your problem it deffinatly sounds like the wires have been crossed.

hI

thx guys. I intend to take off the door covers this weekend and see whats what. I've looked at the wiring diagram in the haynes manual. I'll first be checking to see whether there are any differences between the off side and near side rear window control units. I think that the one touch function is controlled by the window control unit and in the MK3 each window has its own control unit. maybe it would be possible to transfer the control unit on the left rear window to the drivers window. i also need to find out why the illumination does not work on any of the window switches. i hope I do not go and break anything now 'cos everything else works, but it's just one of those minor things thats been bothering me for a while now.

Cheers

It will be different mate! Because the drivers side had dual control over both fronts whereas the passenger side doesnt!

You will probably find a large relay or control box on the drivers side, might be worth testing that.
