I have no doubt this has been raised before - is there any way I can find out if my old mk1 GTI is still alive?

The only place I remember looking for this kind of thing is here --> http://www.rac.co.uk/web/carbuying/vehicle_data_search/ When I put my registration in it works, when I do your mk1 it doesn't,  so it may well have gone to the big Golf heaven in the sky.

Yeah my first one RWC 792W, what happened to that? I owned that back in 1988!!!!! Still haven't forgotten the registration of my very first mk1 Golf GTI

Doesn't mean that it's dead. My Mk1 is alive and kicking, but fails to register on that site. I think some of the old cars that didn't change hands over a period of time have skipped that database.
So they may well still be out there!
