mk3 gti wont start

hi, im the owner of a mk3 golf gti 8v 1996n. the problem is it wont start, its turning over but it just wont fire !!
not sure whether its the immobiliser on the alarm not comming off or its something else !!
i had same prob with a 16v astra gte and that was the fuel pump relay, it fed the coil and the pump !
is the vw one the same ??
your help would be appreciated

probably the coil pack. v common, mine did it 3 weeks afdter i bought it. £40 -50.
