MK3 Alloys- Which ones
« on: 26 May 2006, 20:44 »
I've but a post in the wanted topic for some standard Gti 5 stud alloys. Any other suggestions as to which alloys to put on my black 97 16v. I want them to be fairly subtle as I'm in my thirties now!!! Hence why I want some standard ones, 15" BBS on at the mo but are very corroded.

Cheers, I quite like the ones you have, do you have a pic of your car with them on?

This is the best I can do at this time in a morning:

I like them, always have.  Just put new tyres all round (uniroyal rainsports 195/50/15) for £160 fitted, chuffed to bits.

why did you go for 195/50/15's ? surely the tyre footprint and rolling radius are both smaller than they should be aren't they?

You can put either on according to the fuel filler flap and the owners manual.  I went for slightly thinner tyres for a couple of reasons; living in the sub tropical climate of the North West we tend to get loads of rain especially on my route to work from Near Blackpool to Stockport.  Secondly, because they were £20 per tyre cheaper than the equivalent 205's so I saved £80 which is ace.  I think the rolling radiius of the wheel reduced by about 2.5%, I'm still getting 39 - 41 mpg commuting to work so I'm pretty pleased.

The rainsports have been well tested already this week and they work really well.  The better tyre was the Vredestein Sportrac 2 which came out top in the Autoexpress (?) tyre test beating all the top manufacturers.  Was promised those but they couldn't get them, these are pretty good though.  Always used to have Uniroyals years ago.

You're right though, the car did come with 205's originally but I remember all my other GTis (3 x Mk3 8v's) had 195's on.

ahh , you're right. i never noticed that. I need two new fronts . dya reckon i can fit 195's to the fronts but leave 205's on the back til they need changing?

I'm not sure how that would work to be honest.  I personally would be tempted to stick 4 195's on and sell on your 205's as part worns, it might cost you one extra tyre overall but you wuld get 4 new ones instead of 2.

They reckon that new tyres should always go on the back as well, heres a link to the michelin website:

I always used to stick mine on the fronts, up till now.  To add to that, heres a link to a PDF from ROSPA showing how tyres really go "off" after 4mm of tread is left:

http://www.rospa.com/roadsafety/info/tyre_tread_depth.pdf  Interesting reading, mine were on 3.5 - 4 when I changed them.  I might put this info in the general section, it might get stickied you never know.

Some places you go to will only fit new tyres to the rear anyway. I needed 2 new fronts on a passat I used to own but they would only fit to the rear. After they had fitted the old rears to the front I had terrible road noise and tyre rumble from the fronts which sounded like a dodgy wheel bearing (until I swapped them back to the original position which cured it instantly)

I do prefer to keep the tyre in the same position all the time as I think they 'wear' to the geometry etc of that place on the car.
