Removing Key scratches

Hey guys, I've just got my VR6, which is awesome ..  But it got keyed by some little f%4cker while the previous owner had it...  Was wondering if anyone had any advice for sorting it out?  I've ordered some touch-up paint of the same colour, but I'm not sure exactly how to go about it, in terms of preparing the surface.

It's not rusty or anything, but it's been on there for months (Previous owner had no pride obviously .. but he is a mate of mine, so I'll put it down to laziness )

I've got some bits of surface rust (little on rear door near window) which'll obviously need sanding down/filling/painting, so I'll have plenty of use for that paint... Should I approach the scratches in the same way?

It's not, nor ever going to be, a show car, so I'm not too worried about it standing up to close inspection.  I know getting the whole thing resprayed would be best, but I'm a)Not rich enough, b)Not worried enough about it to spend that much.

what ive done with scratches ( in pearlescent) is get a fine artists paintbrush and paint the scratch, wait for it to dry,t-cut and repeat until it is level with the original paint. It requires some real patience as its tempting to t cut too soon and undo your hard work. I cant even see where i did it now.

Hmm..  Well, got the bank holiday weekend coming up, so I'll have plenty of time

would it not be better to paint layers on until it's more-or-less level with the existing paint and then t-cut?  I would've thought all that t-cutting will thin out the surrounding paint a bit

it only takes a couple or three layers and the existing paint will be harder anyway i should think.
