Wheel sizes?

I'm looking at a set of wheels for my gti, on standard suspension. Does anyone know what sizes you can or can't fit, obviously the obvious applies, I just trying to work out what sizes you can do without using too much spacers! 
What wheel sizes are you guys running on?

I got a set of 17 x 7 with a et of 45 my mate has offered me, does anyone think I could get these to fit? If so how and what size tyres?

17*7 will fit but not with that offset i don't think, plus mk2 run like sh|t on 17s

Thanks for reply. What about fitting some spacers to reduce the offset? Would that work?

Spacers would be needed to reduce it down to 36, also the car will handle like crap, arch mods will be needed if it is lowered, and there are loads of subjects on this.

I drove mine on 17's for 2 years and then jumped into the edition one on 15's and it's a completely different experience. much better on 15's. plus I know it looked good on 17's, but when the proper ride height 15's look just as cool.

Mine ran on the 17's in my sig (Offset ET40) for a few years, no probs with arch work or anything, all standard suspension. And it DIDN'T handle like crap, it does handle better now it has the RA's back on, but I think the suspension plays a massive part in this.

Like Dizzie says, it does look good on the 17's, I'd probably still have mine on, but I've been told I now have no-where to store a spare set of wheels, so the BBS are now back on.

Oh and did I mention that I'm trying to sell the wheels in this pic @ the moment? *cough, cough*
