rear brake hose
« on: 16 May 2006, 18:50 »
I took both of the rear calipers off today for reconditioning only to find that one of the hoses has been rubbing and has almost worn away

It is the one on the drivers side that comes from the back of the caliper and runs off somewhere under the car. I presume to the passenger side. (cant quite see).

Would anyone have the part number (if you can understand my jibber jabber) or correct name please and where is the best bet for this part?  ie GSF or Euro etc.

Does it look like this? It goes from the caliper to the metal brake line on the rear beam. 160mm long according to the vwspares site.

If so:

Metal or rubber? Is it the handbrake cable?

Its rubber but then turns into metal after about a metre or so. im begining to wonder if the previous owner has done something to this themselves as i cant find a part anywhere on the net other than the one you posted earlier. it definately not the hand brake mate

I was playing around with my rear brakes a couple of weeks ago on an 88 gti and don't remember anything like that!

i play around with gti's every day and can't think of a brake line that has rubber for a metre and then turns to steel. usually a flexi hose as shown in previous posting, then a short steel pipe along the trailing arm of the rear axle then another similar hose into another steel pipe that either goes to the front of the car(master cylinder) or to the rear brake compensator. Any chance of a picture so some-one can help a little more?

As you have both said that is how i remember things. I have just had a look under my mates and his is how i expected and nothing like mine. the previous owner has for whatever reason cut the steel pipe and replaced part of it with a longer rubber hose which is a s%@t idea. Cant help the breaking at all.

Cheers for your help sorting this guys.

The car is now booked in with another mate of mine who is going to redo the steel piping and i will now order the correct hose.

It just goes to show there are some real muppets out there.

Nice one! Lucky you found it when you did if it's starting to wear away!
