new mk3/mk4 or mk2 calipers

Hi,

I have heard that the mk3 golf calipers are better than the mk2 ones as they do not seize as easily...

Anyone know if this is true and whether it would be a bolt on replacement?

Also, would mk4 calipers work, or do they work differently?

Yeah that's all true, they are a lot better, I think the MK4 ones are better still. As far as I can remember the MK3 ones should go straight on but youy need a different brake pipe connecter? I remember seeing that Goodridge do a braided hose kit that should do it, may be worth thinking about while you're at it anyway?

Don't take the brake pipe connector as gospel, I'm not even awake yet?

i've got mk4's on mine and yeah they are the best ones to get. you'll need an adaptor hose which c&r enterprises do, or if you know a place that makes braided hoses they'll be able to knock one up for you. the mk4's use a banjo fitment. also depending on what year yours is you might need a different handbrake cable. is yours a genuine big bumper model? if so it'll be fine..

Hi, I've been on C&R Enterprise's website, seen the calipers with the adaptor hose. But, do you use standard discs and pads (i.e. i have a mk2 16v, so i woukd use standard pads and discs for 16v, an 8v using 8v parts obviously) or is  there a different size discs and pads to use? Alsso, which mk4 are these calipers from? Would have thought different mk4's have different calipers, perhaps I'm wrong. Cheers

i got my calipers of a gti but they all appear to be the same. i think... on the early ones at least. and i've just carried on using the mk2 pads/discs, in fact i did all my rear set up recently using mk2 discs and greenstuff pads.

MK4 calipers are the same as MK3 but are made out of aluminium and have different fittings as said.  If you get em off a MK3, make sure you get the later type as the early MK3s had the same calipers as fitted to the MK2.

Good news its dead easy to tell, the old type will have a big spring on the outside for the handbrake, and the later type don't.
