what should I do?

i am in need of some advice please.
Basically i bought a mk3 diesel a few months ago as a stop  gap while i had some other work done on my other car. I knew it only had a short mot and that suited me. So tuesday I booked desmond in for his mot and with a little help from a diesel boost thing he went thro no problem,  i never dreamed  he would pass as it smokes a bit . 
i had a chat with the mechanic and he thinks that the car would benefit from an engine overhaul or a replacement engine , but these sound like costly options to me.
As i only paid 225 for the car is it worth spending this kind of money on a k plate , I have in the few months i have owned the car come to quite like it,
Fuel economy is not great so would this improve with some work,
My husband has said he will help me to do the work if i was to tackle it myself
Or would you just sell the car

i think its time to get rid as it would be to expensive,
if you only payed £225 for it it must be on its last legs,
i would say a rebuild was around £800.

Us petrolheads can spell..... it's C H E E K Y... And diesels stink. 

Seriously, I think you could get a turboburner for about a grand in pretty good order. So it's not worth rebuilding yours I'm afraid...
