gti interior transplant
« on: 04 May 2006, 16:27 »
hello everyone, i'm new to the forums here
really cool site ya got going here, and with all these knowledgable golf owners i'm sure someone can give me some advice, i don't own a gti but am interested in doing my golf mk3 cl up with various gti goodies, so i thought i would ask a few questions about what i can and can't use

firstly i wanna make the interior nice, as when i'm driving around i like to be surrounded in a cabin of luxury he he, so can i get interior, i.e seats doorcards and all other black trim from a gti and put it to good use in my cl, i'm pretty sure seats won't be an issue, i was more worried about things like the door cards, i wanna also make my cl a little more electronically engaging hence the door cards that allready have the window switches on, obviously i'll have to take the motor and other bits out of the donor car as well.

Basically i wanna know if it's a straight forward transplant from one vehicle to the other, any help that is given will be gratefully received, this is also my first car, so i'm pretty excited about it

any other cool tips that anyone has would be great!

thanks a lot

thats one of the great things about vw's, loads of stuff is interchangable. interiors definately!! if you find a good one in a scrappy, rob the lot!!! even if initially the electric's aren't wired up it'll be a nicer place to sit!
team grumpy....... its a way of life, not a forum post

It's pretty straight forward don't worry, just make sure you work slowly and methodically..

I did it to my first car, a Mk2 Golf. I got hold of a 16v interior from a breakers nice and cheap. Got the carpets, the seats, door cards, pillar trims, roof lining the lot. I got it all home, and started stripping the car starting with the seats, doorcards, then the carpets and roof lining etc. Putting everything back is just the reverse of how you took them out. Start with the carpet (and give a good clean etc whilst it's in) then door cards, seats etc etc..

A good tip is to make sure you have some spare fixing clips handy as you'll be surprised just how easy these can break when trying to prise them off (especially the door card ones). There is nothing worse than trying to chase down those annoying rattles from inside the car   But maybe I'm just a perfectionist.. Also if the seats have a wobble get yourself a new set of clips for those too..

Shouldn't take you too long to switch it all over, just take your time... it's easy!

Hope that helps, and good luck

Ah excellent, i didn't really think about the carpet yet, but i suppose i will nead everything to make it look sweet, and yeah little rattles would piss me off big time, so the extra clips sound like a good idea. One more thing if you can help, what about the ceiling material, does the gti have black or the standard cream of my cl, if they differ is this very hard to change, as mine is a bit yellow from nicotine i think.

Btw cheers for the replies, i can sleep happy in the knowledge that my golf will be all suave inside soon :smug:

The roof lining is the same as far as I know.. My 96 GTi has a gray/creamish white colour lining so I would imagine it's the same as yours. So I wouldn't worry too much about the lining. You could always try clean up the roof liner with some of that interior cleaner you can buy (the foam ones).. Done mine not so long back and brought it up a treat, just try not to get it too wet as it will stain!.

Bottom of my door pillars (trim) is black the rest up are white, so if yours are not grab yourself some, same for the rears too. You should only need the seats, door cards, switches for the electrics(and looms)black carpet if yours isn't and you're pretty much sorted bud...

And when you change the door cards over, just try not to damage the plastic membrane. If it is damaged replace it as it will let water into the door and could stain/damage the door card.
