which 1.8t to buy?
« on: 02 May 2006, 11:35 »
Hello, new to this forum.

I am looking to get a 1.8T GTi, but there are lots of differnt HP versions/ trim types about.

Looking to pay £4000 max and expect to get over 200BHP with a chip (previous cars Accord Type R Civic Type R and currently S2000, so sub 200 BHP not interesting).

Will all 1.8Ts deliver that kind of power with just a chip or only some?

Any specifics would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Alex

there are two varients of 1.8T in terms of HP

you've got the 150 and the 180bhp.  the 180's i think only came out after the Anniversary edition was launched in 2002 (i think!)

there are also various engine codes to look out for; I'm not sure which ones are the best but there are plenty of people on here who do

for 4K you're probably looking at an earlier 1.8T.  A remap and an exhaust should see you close if not over the 200bhp mark.  I think it all depends on the engine code  :undecided:

have a look at the common faults guide at the top of this page for an idea of soemthings to look out for.  It's a work in progress at the moment but gives you an idea of what might go wrong, symptoms etc.

And welcome to the forum

NB.  All re-map figures are approximate & depend on exhaust, filter & who's rolling road etc.!

1.8 T 20v (AGU Engine code) 150 bhp - Throttle cable, KO3 turbo, 5 speed :- Re-map to 195-210 bhp.

1.8 T 20v (ARZ) 150 bhp - Drive-By-Wire, KO3 turbo, 5 speed.  :- Re-map to 195-210 bhp.

1.8 T 20v (AUM) 150 bhp - DBW, VVT, KO3s turbo, 5 speed  :- Re-map to 220-230 bhp.

1.8 T 20v (AUQ) 180 bhp - DBW, VVT, KO3s turbo, 6 speed  :- Re-map to 220-230 bhp.

apparently the agu engine like i have in my 1999 golf is the strongest one and it has been known for this engine to get over 300bhp easily

Cheers, Taf, I couldn't wait to get them on, as I went off those OE Montreal's.

The spoilers cost me £25 each to be painted, but that was when I worked for BMW, & knew a guy.  He didn't really want to do it, but I managed to pursuade him!!!
