Gearbox linkage replacement
« on: 24 April 2006, 12:58 »
Hi,

Recently carried out the gear linkage replacement following the write up in the maintenance section, bought the parts off ebay including the new gear stick ball and socket arrangement, but still struggling to find 2nd gear when changing down. Noticed on another topic that i'm actually missing the relay shaft ball (not part of the kit)
Is this available any where to buy or is it a trip to the scrappy to 'obtain' one? Also need an alignment toll as i dont think i correctly set everything up.

This is where i got my ball from. And you will need a tool to set the linkages up correctly. You can do it without 1 but its allot of trial and error. I got my tool from some guy on ebay.

You have 3 choices:
1. buy complete relay shaft from VW/GSF
2. buy bush from site above
3. visit your local scrappy and pillage one off a rod change MK2/MK3 Golf or SEAT :) (the shaft may not be the same if you dont get it from a MK2 Golf, but the ball itself will swap onto your old shaft)

Thought i'd just let you all know, I got both a relay shaft and a weighted link from the local scrappy for a fiver (complete bargain) fitted both and set up the alignment with a cassette tape in the lock out (couldn't wait to order a tool as car used daily) just taken it for a test drive and its like driving a completely different car. Responsive gear changes, no (well hardly any) play in the gear stick.
Thanks to all who advised
