Whole new clutch?
« on: 23 April 2006, 02:58 »
I've got a new gearbox for my beloved, but it's a 24 spline job, code ATH. I'd like to use it because it has far better ratios for my style of driving, which is smooth low rev/high gear sensible town driving :nerd:, with occasional long distance motorway thrashing in the small hours

As far as I know, my current original clutch will take a 21 spline shaft, though I've yet to rip out the current box. I'll do that when me mate is over. It's likely that the clutch is on it's way out, and I don't like it much anyway, so....

What clutches are recommended for fitting on a MK2 8v 1.8GTi? I'm not a racer, I just want a good everyday clutch that's nice and smooth, and will take the new gearbox I've got. Any suggestions? Oh and there's been talk of flanges involved in changing it....  What are they?

what you do is fit the flywheel, pressure plate etc that matches the engine, then fit the clutch that goes with the box.  What car was the ATH from?

If the driveshaft flanges are a different size (the bits where the driveshafts bolt onto) then you can either get the gorrect driveshafts for the box, or swap the flanges on from your old box :)

Thanks!

I think the flywheel/pressure plate (I thought they were the same thing in Golfs?) can stay on, unless it's cracked or otherwise knackered.

I'm not sure what car the ATH was from, but I can ask the seller if need be. It's from Jan 1990 according to the code, so I reckon a MK2 16v. Haynes lists it as one of the models used.

When you say "fit the clutch that goes with the box", how do I know which ones will go with it? I would just buy one but for the driveshaft issue. I'm pretty sure a clutch for a 16v MK2 would fit the engine, and also take the driveshaft... Am I right?

I've only got a week to get the old girl back on the road, MOT, and new tax before she gets towed away

GSF Has this, as well as a "sport" type for a few more notes. Will that go on my 8v lump to take the gearbox?

24 spline is a 16v clutch. All you will need is the friction plate, not the pressure plate. Then just re-assemble it.

ATH is not a 16v box

it has far longer ratios than a 16v (2y) box

i dont think its a GTI box at all. the ratio's are too wide. looks more like a driver box

I've just re read the original post, and 16v MK2 GTI clutches are actually 28 splines, so you are right it isn't a GTI box at all, 24 spline is 8v fitment.  This is good news in that the box should fit directly on without any messing about with the clutch.  In fact no MK2 has a 21 spline clutch AFAIK?

I'ver just checked on ETOS, and the ATH box is actually from a 1.8 Driver!

Thanks fellas!

I'm gonna get down and dirty when i get back from Wales and if it doesn't fit I'll get myself the new bits. I'll certainly have a look at the state of the clutch while I'm under there.

I'll let you know how it all goes
