4 point sparks?
« on: 11 April 2006, 21:23 »
I pulled out sparks on my 16v to find a set of 4 point sparks.  I would usually stick to the single point book sparks, has anyone got any ideas if there could be another reason for them?  I'm sure its not had a new camshaft and can really see any reason for performance to be better with 4 point... although I'm sure someone will prove me wrong.

Well basically a standard plug will fire from one side of the head towards the other -  a 4 prong plug will always distribute a sideways spark,  ideally this  is more desireable because it exposes the most spark to the fuel charge coming up from the piston face.
Froma performance point is makes little to no difference,  the engine may be more efficent and you may notice a slight improvement in Mpg but highly unlikely,  i've been running these on my Golf and can't telll any difference.
Personally i would stick with the OE

If it is a 90 mph per hour wind and you drive your car at 90mph downwind, if you stick your head outside would you feel the wind?

The only difference between single & 3/4 point spark is that a 3/4 point spark has a longer service life.  There is only ever 1 spark, as the electrode wears away the spark switches to the next shortest gap :)
