mk3 16valver wont start

hi, my mk3 16valver has decided to stop working, it turns over but has does not, got the aa out who sent a local garage out, he checked a few things, but could not get it going, he reckons its a VW dealer job, the thing he did point out is the rev counter is not moving when it is turning over, has anyone got any idea tha may help me?

Hope the cam belt is good , most likely a electrical fault on the ign side. Check the supply to the ign coil, the ign amps are a known fault, also the ecu relays are a known weak point. Good luck  .
