Hi all
I have a Mk2 16v Golf GTI Turbo and I have recently blown the rebuilt gearbox (again) so I am looking for a third gearbox, the box that blew had been fully rebuilt with bolted diff, but now all the gears are in pieces!
What I would love to know is which other VW gearboxes would fit with the minimum amount of hassle.
I don't want to have to change my clutch as its an expensive Helix Autosport item and I recently replaced it.
The car is running over 200bhp and about the same amount of torque.
Any suggestions appreciated...
Cheers

  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
If its a 16v clutch you have on there right now, then pretty sure the only rod change box that will work is a 2y from a MK2 16v or an early MK3 GTI :)

Might be the time to consider a refurbed one with the diff bolt kit fitted ;)

  • DUBS DONT DIE, THEY JUST GET LOWER!!
i think your stuck between a rock and a hard place dub,
you will blow any box you put on there while you have that clutch even if you put on a rebuilt on with or without the bolt kit for the diff and its alot of money to find that out. i think you are in denile and just putting off the inevitable. i would sell the clutch you have while its still worth selling then go out and get a rebuilt VR6 box. its hassle and money but you will end up spending more on standard replacement boxes. unfortunatly if you have a car with that kind of power nothing is going to be cheap.

but hey look on the bright side.........................it could be raining.  LOL>

Thanks for the help!

Gonna buy a standard second hand box just to get the car back on the road for now, then worry about it when that one blows up!

Anyone got one for sale? If in the North Wales area then all the better...

Maybe I should stock up on gearboxes!

Cheers

a VR6 box won't bolt up, bell housing is different.

However, I've got a corrado 1.8 16v box, it's the stronger cable change but make an offer if you want it?

How difficult is it to change from rod change to cable? Whats involved?

Haven't done it myself but you'd need the gearshift bit and some cables! possibly some clips too. Would imagine the most time would be spent aligning the cables...
