GTI running in / oil changes
« on: 02 April 2006, 21:03 »
We picked up our new GTI yesterday - red 5 dr, 18s, black leather, centre armrest, rear park sensors, winter pack - and loving it so far, great car

Asked dealer about running in, he just said don't go above 75% of max speed, and don't labour engine.

Has anyone had any more specific advice, such as don't go above x rpm for x miles, then y rpm up to y miles etc?

And with the car telling you when it wants its first service, which likely to be a year or so, does anyone change their oil earlier than that? What oils are people using?

cheers

Just quoting from the user manual:

Engine
Up to 1000km (620miles)
-Do not drive faster than three quarters of top speed  ie 110mph
-Do not use full throttle ie no pedal to the metal.
-Avoid high engine speeds ie anything above 4000rpm (my guess)
-Do not tow a trailer

From 1000 to 1500 km (620-932 miles)
Speeds can be gradually increased to maximum road speed or engine speed (rpm)

Tyres and pads
During the first 200-300km take it easy.

No oil changes required before standard service interval.  Just check level regularly and top up with long life oil if required.

I will pick up a litre of oil (Castrol SLX LongLife II) when I'm in getting the iPod fitted later this week.

Thanks for the reply - just have to try and restrain ourselves a bit for those first 1,000 miles then.

Maybe we should get one of these devices:
