Hi guys and gals, i'm new!! just a few q's if i may?

hi all, my names john 22 years of age, computer techi and photoshopper, and have been viewing the fourm for around 4 months as a guest now.

I've had a search around to try and find the answers i'm after, so sorry if i'm being a typical "newbie".

i'm looking to buy a mk 4 pd tdi some time soon, and just want to know a few things.

1) how can i tell if the car is a pd tdi model....

2) my uncle bought a "150bhp" version of the golf to later find it was a 130bhp chipped to 150bhp (bummer) whats the best way the tell the 110 115 130 and 150 apart? (any number i should be looking for?)

3) whats the best pd model (bhp)  to go for?

4) And what are the pros an cons of chipping a tdi (i'm also yet to find a chipping section on here) i guess the ebay ones are a no no.

5) i fancy the idea of some 18" rs8 replicas, what aaffect does wheel siz have on mpg?

welcome mate

best way to check for sure is to look either at the front of the service book or in the boot under the carpet. there should be a sticker there with the engine output in kW.  If it says 96kW then its a PD 130  the 115 is 84kW  and the 150 is over the 100 mark 

also the PD models came with a 6 speed box 

got a 130 myself and im well impressed with it.  haven't driven the others so can't comment.

can't answer your othe questions i'm afraid mate but there are plenty of people about who will be able to   

though instead of chipping; you want to get it remapped  a 130 will remap to around 170bhp but torque goes from 228 to 270lbs ft  giving you a fair bit more overtaking power

ok and thanks for the speedy reply...... just checked out revos website (dealer 10mins from me!!!!  free trial  ) yeah i was thinking of going for the 130bhp model.....

do you know of any golf website (the kind off stuff like interior bits....... mats badges etc etc)

Hi and welcome,

In theory anything from the 2001 facelift onwards should be a PD engine. As Rhyso says, it should have a 6 speed box although the very very first 115 PD engines were 5 speed.

The best engine in my opinion is the 130. The 150 is clearly quicker but can be a pain in the arse in the wet when pulling out into traffic. The 130 just seems to be the best alrounder.

No personal experience of chipping/remapping TDIs but can only be a good thing....
