starter motor
« on: 28 February 2006, 17:53 »
Hi. I have a '99 Golf 1.8 GTi with a small problem. The starter motor dog is not dissengaging immediately after the engine fires up & this causes a loud unpleasant noise every time. It had a new starter motor fitted not long ago before I owned it. Any ideas how I can stop the noise?

see these threads

- 1.8T Noisy on Initial Startup
- Mk4 GOLF GTI 1.8T ENGINE SOUND

I reckon they're all related and the gen consensus is that it's not a problem. Apparently Mk5 Golf GTi's also make a TRRRRR sound on startup for a second or 2. May or may not be starter motor...

MInes been making that noise aswell, but recenlty i had my dual mass flywheel n clutch replaced by Doncaster Gearbox Services, and i got them to have a look at my starter. All they could see wrong was that it had become dry, which was causing the noise as it retracted from start up.

But as they told me, it'll be fine for a while yet and only replace when your sick of the noise or it starts causing problems on start up.

its a bit annoying but i'll save the money till it needs t be spent, its already cost me a grand and ive only had it 4 week!

I had a 1.8 Gti and was making the exact same noise when starting up.

I took the starter motor off and it looked dry like someone mentioned so i sprayed WD40 in there, the noise stopped for about a week then it came back.

I lived with that noise for 2 years but the car never failed to start.
