Hunt for Grunt !
« on: 20 November 2003, 11:24 »
Hey peps - back to ask the foutain of VW knowledge for help (again) ...

I've got a engineering background and been f**king baout with cars and race cars for years, but never got in to the whole Vee Dub scene till now so slightly lacking in knowledge.

I've got a 89 Digi 8V and it's in A1 condition with only 70k on the clock - but deep down looking back I should have got a valver I know.

Basically I'm on "the hunt for more grunt" - all the most obvious things go without saying - but things like Audi Throttle bodies etc without specific knowledge of VW's I'm completely over looking somethings !!!

The cars driven on a day-to-day basis and i'm not looking for mega power so i'll probably look at mild head work - cam - exhaust - induction etc - anyother VW specific tricks I'm missing?

Have the intake machined (gasket matched) to the head same as the exhaust ports to the header. Intake runners extrude honed, Cam it up, Induction kit and nice free lowing exhaust should free up lot's of power. These seem to be pretty reliable mods as well. This is about what I am planning on come spring when the weather gets warm again.

Well having an ECU I sorta assumed when I got the car that u could chip it, but have yet to come across anything !!! ( Even on eBay !!! )

What chips have people come across? Where's a good source to get one?

ebay has loads of chip mods usually but i think they are just cheap crap
im not sure i would trust them, i thought a decent chip would set you back at least a couple of hundred quid

i dont really know enough about them

Most of the tuning firms offer chips but make sure you get a print out before and after on the rolling road, also its better to get the chip matched to your car rather than just fitting one you've bought and not knowing how much gain it is made.
