which gearbox

I have got a mk1 with an audi 2.0e lump(3A) in it but gearbox is shagged, any ideas what boxes will fit? Tops out at 110mph now so is really noisy on the motorway 80mph @ 4k, would a 16v help or do i need a diesel box? What is the difference between tall or shorter ratios because i can never remember? Or could i use my original 1,2,3 ratios then stick 4,5 out of something else to make motorway cruising more refined?

a 16v gearbox would probably give you the same ratios (or similar) you already have. the 16v's top speed comes not from the gearbox but a high (fairly) revving engine.

has anyone ever touched the rev limiter in 5th on a vavler?
